-Voluntary prayer after the `ishaa prayer -The sunnah for a muslim is to pray two rak`ahs of voluntary prayer after the `ishaa prayer. Its performance in the hause is better than in the mosque. After that, a person can pray the witr prayer with either one rak`ah, or three, or five or more. The best is pray to eleven rak`ahs. After each two rak`ah one should say salam after ten rak`ahs, one should pray one rak`ah of witr. This can be performed either in the first part of the night, or the middle or the last part; whichever is easy for a person. However, the last part of the night is best for one who is able to pray then. By doing this, a person would be following what the Prophet (saw) did as has been reported by `Aaishah (r.a) who said: the Prophet used to perform witr every night, and he would (at times) complete his witr at the end of the night. Imam Bukhari and Muslim reported this hadith. Similarly, Imam Muslim reported on the authority of Jaabir that the Prophet (saw) said: If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should perform witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable. -The Permanent Committee for Research and Verdicts
