1.16 Receiving revelation on the road to Emmaus Here is the awesome experience of two disciples who received revelation on the road to Emmaus (Luke Chapter 24). After Jesus had been crucified and buried, two disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus that was seven miles away. They were dejected because they were hoping that Jesus would redeem Israel but now he was dead, and their hopes were shattered. As they were talking, the resurrected Christ drew near and went with them. Their eyes were restrained (without revelation) and they could not recognize Jesus. So they reasoned about the strange events that they had heard from the women about the empty tomb. Let us read from Luke 24 what happened next:- (Luke 24:25-32) 25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at MOSES and all the PROPHETS, He EXPOUNDED TO THEM IN ALL THE SCRIPTURE THINGS CONCERNING HIMSELF. 28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them. 30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then THEIR EYES WERE OPENED and they KNEW HIM; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “DID NOT OUR HEART BURN WITHIN US while He talked with us on the road, and while He OPENED THE SCRIPTURE TO US?” That must have been an awesome revelation-packed session - to have Jesus expound to them from the Old Testament Scriptures things about himself. These were Jews who grew up on the Scriptures, yet they did not have the revelation of Jesus. But that was a defining moment when Jesus switched on the light and expounded revelations to them. As they broke bread, their eyes were opened and they knew him. They did not know him earlier despite walking many miles with him. Its the same for Christians, we may have journeyed as a Christian reading the Bible every week for years but we feel that we do not really know him. We need our spiritual eyes to be opened to know him and to have a revelation of him through the Bible. We need him to come alive to us. What did they experience when Jesus expounded the Scriptures? They felt their hearts on fire - burning within them. That is what we can experience too when we receive revelation of Christ - it can set our hearts on fire with the fires of revival and the passion for Christ. When this happens, you will find yourself naturally drawn to read the Bible.
