Mathis “Marian wins the battle but St. Joe looks to the Future” South Bend, Indiana – 3A # 1 rated one loss Mishawaka Marian won their “Holy War” at South Bend St. Joe on 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 in 67 minutes Thursday night in a prelude to Friday’s big football game at Marian… Marian was bigger and quicker, usually a deadly combination… But, St. Joe had a plan hatched by their veteran Coach Kathy Mossey… After a decided loss to 3A # 4 New Prairie on Monday, Coach Mossey felt she needed to make a lineup change, moving her best athlete (Nicole Francoeur) from Middle to Left… This meant that Francoeur or outstanding sophomore Mackenzie Chrapliwy would be available at all times, with one left moving to the back row when the other rotated to the front… It was a bold move which seemed to revitalize the Indians after their thrashing on Monday… Bravely they fought and bravely they learned which could pay dividends during the sectionals just a few weeks away… Marian won’t soon forget beating the Indians during the season while falling to a fired up Indian squad the last two years at Plymouth… Two years ago, diminutive senior jumping jack Katie Hecklinski (now a sophomore at Saint Mary’s College) tore their heart out while last October 6’2” MA toothpick Lauren Gillis (enrolled as a student at Indiana University) took the Knights down in a 16-14 thriller…. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to find their way, the Indians went down by 5 right off the bat (SJ HE; M OPP Colleen Hunsberger K; SJ back row attacking violation; M Setter Maggie Gibson with an overpass K; SJ LA Nicole Francoeur is blocked by a 2 up)… SJ gets untracked with M SE… Return favor by SJ… SJ Francoeur K; M Allison “Foxtail” Ketcham picks up her first kill on a beautiful wrist away cut shot…Senior backup MA Courtney Kruggel K; Another K for Ketcham… M K Ketcham… M 8-3… M HE; M Scramble play; A couple passing errors force the SJ setter into the net; SJ PE; M SE; SJ Chrapliwy ace; M Bueter line shot K; SJ heats up for 3 (Francoeur has back to back Ks; M setting error)… M 12-10… M Bueter hits the tape with a shot that finally falls in… M 6’3” MA Elizabeth Asdell gets the rock for a K; SJ Libero Chelsea Suppinger makes a great play but M scores again… 6’ junior MA Alyssa Hasler picks up her first K – four in a row Knights… M 16-10… M picks up 3 more to make it 19-10… M server picks up her 2nd first serve error to give the Indiana hope… Strong sophomore contributor Mallorie Kendzicky scores an back to back aces… M 19-13… All State player Bueter gets a back 2 set for a K... Asked about the lineup change, Coach Mossey said she took the starters aside just yesterday… Her team responded extremely well… With most of the players playing club volleyball in the so called “off season” it is understandable that they could move into new positions and do it quickly… Senior Left Nicole Francoeur said: “Our lineup was a last minute change…We all bought in… We were fired up… We wanted it… We connected as a team… We weren’t afraid.” Penn transfer her junior year, St. Joe Senior setter Morgan Holland: “We worked extra hard at practice…We had good chemistry…We wanted to win… We kept fighting.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stats New Prairie (24-1) SB St Joe (?)
