1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Peter in his exhortation to the believers of Asia Minor has told them they were hand picked by God to be believers of that time. He also placed upon them their calling as a royal priesthood while also pointing out that they were to be a holy nation ruled by a higher standard than the unbelieving world, and to conclude this verse he tells them, that they..., are a...,peculiar people! Yep, peculiar. To the world the believers are certainly peculiar even strange. According to Paul in 1st Corinthians chapter one the preaching of the cross is foolishness to the wise yet it is the power of God to those who are saved. But, Peter was not saying that these believers were weird or strange by any measure. The word peculiar both in the Hebrew and I the Greek means something much more beautiful and powerful. Once taken back to its original, peculiar means, a prized treasured possession. What the scripture is telling not only those believers then but is also telling us today is that we are the Lords prized treasure. Imagine you are not just a treasure but a prized treasure! It is like a king who has amassed a house full of gold silver and precious stones. The king has sculptures and paintings displayed all around and has the finest furniture made of the richest materials and yet within all of his possessions there is one that means more to him than any other. The one thing that had to be purchased at a great cost, possibly costing him the lives of a thousand soldiers to obtain it. The king places this possession on display in the most secure place within his palace and every time he gazes upon it, his heart is filled with pride and joy. We believers are just such a treasure to God. Our lives cost Him a great price, it cost Him, his life, the life of Jesus in order to buy us out of the bondage of sin. By His own blood He purchased the most cherished possession in the entire universe, the human race. My how special we are that not only does he want us displayed before the unbelieving world but He holds us in the palm of His hand so that we can never be separated from again. And for all He has done Peter tells us in the conclusion of this verse, that we should shew forth the praises of him who hath called is out of darkness into his glorious light.
