1 year ago today I had just walked in the Peoples Clinic 1st Annual 5K two days earlierand gotten bitten BADLY by the running bug for the first time in my life. So I downloaded the Couch to 5K app and, 365 days ago, stepped outside and tried to run for I think 30 seconds. It. Was. Ugly. 35 years of smoking, 50 lbs of extra weight, and a lifetime of sedentary living had taken their toll and I couldnt even begin to run for 1 minute. But I kept trying, and by Friday of that week (my third day of trying to run), I had strained the medial ligaments of both knees so badly that I couldnt hardly walk. I went crawling to my boss, sure she would refer me for surgery, and instead she told me I was obese and out of shape. If you know me at all, you would know that for me to continue with this crazy idea is COMPLETELY out of character for me. I have no idea why I did. But one year later, I have run 5Ks, a 4 miler, a 10K, and two half marathons. I will run my third on Saturday and qualify for the group Half Fanatics. I have run 14 and 15 miles in training and I have run 620-some miles in 2014 alone. Ive lost 50 lbs, I feel strong, and I am just beginning. And I have met some of the coolest people ever in the group Moon Joggers. So today is my ONE YEAR RUNNIVERSARY - one of the biggest achievements Ive ever done in my life because it was one of the hardest. Thanks to everyone who has cheered me on, but especially Terry, because having him join me in running is one of the biggest joys of my life.
