10 Buet students on remand 61 others freed hours after arrest from a restaurant A Dhaka court yesterday placed 10 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) on one-day remand each in connection with “plotting subversive activities”. On Thursday around 10:30pm, based on information of a suspicious gathering, police had picked up 72 people — 60 Buet students, 11 students of different private universities and a teacher of Buet — at a restaurant on BCC Road in the capital’s Wari area, said Elias Sharif, deputy commissioner (DC) of Wari division. Of the 60 Buet students detained, 50 were fresh men. Quoting the detainees, the DC said the first-year students had gone to the restaurant on invitation from a few of their seniors. The first-year students and Buet teacher were handed over to Buet authorities early yesterday while the 11 students of other universities were freed in the afternoon, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Wari police Tapan Chandra Saha. The OC said they had recovered nothing suspicious from the detainees. However, 10 senior students of Buet were handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of Police. Suspecting that the students were plotting subversive activities, the detectives yesterday produced them before a court seeking five days’ remand for each, said investigation officer Inspector Jahangir Alam of DB. Contacted, Buet Registrar AKM Masud said since the incident took place outside the campus, it was out of their jurisdiction and that the investigation by law enforcers should take its own course.
