150 Voices for 150 Years: An Autobiography of Us We return today with another Bellinger family letter. Fannie Bellinger and her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Bellinger were residents of the Kennesaw Mountain area before the Civil War and theirs was a well-known family name in the community. Mrs. Bellinger was a widow, her husband having died two years into their marriage, and Fannie was her only child. Fannie and Elizabeth left the Marietta/Kennesaw Mountain area ahead of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Their letters to each other and to and from their friends give detailed accounts of the impact war had upon civilians and how many aspects of everyday life continued. May 1864 My dear Mother, I have just received your affection, and I assure you that I was delighted to hear that your got home safely. I am very sorry that Marietta will have to be given up, but I hope you will come back before the Yanks get there. You have no idea how I want you to see to see my dear old home once before it is torn down by the [illegible] but it is useless for me to waste my time in writing such foolish wish. You said I must fast. I will try, and if close application and hard study will do it, I intend one day to make you proud of your daughter. I hope Clara Varner will recover soon. I am sorry to hear that the people are all driven from their homes by the Yankees. If the Yankees do get to Marietta you must be sure to leave for I could not live without you. You must be sure to write me every day as long as you can. Tell Harriett to come down here, and if she can not come she must write me often. Mother you must excuse my writing for the ink spreads so bad that I dont expect you can read it. Write often to your daughter. Fannie Bellinger Does Clara Varner recover? Does the Bellinger family home survive? We invite you to return as future posts will include more correspondence from Fannie and Elizabeth Bellinger. #150VoicesOfUs #HashtagHistory
