Advanced technology to be used in Andaman Marathon Port Blair, Jan 20 This year, the Andaman Marathon 2015 will be using advanced technology for ensuring accurate results and timing for each and every runner in the event. The Andaman Chamber of Commerce has given a contract to Beckley Solutions, Mumbai, who will be providing chip embedded bib to every runner and with this technology every runner’s timing would be recorded by computer and subsequently, the runners can login to the website and after putting their bib number can get their certificate printed along with their timings. This will be the first time, when such advanced technology will be used in the islands, a communication said. Workshop on ‘Cooperatives for better living’ held Port Blair, Jan 20 With the aim to create awareness among the student about cooperative, the National Cooperative Union of India, Cooperative Education Field Project (Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation), A & N Island Unit organized a workshop ‘on cooperatives for better living’ in the conference hall of GSSS, Bambooflat today. Mass turtle nesting at Cuthbert Bay WL sanctuary Areas prone to nesting protected by Wildlife Division Port Blair, Jan 20 As usual, the turtle nesting season started this year from November, 2014 onwards and turtles started visiting Cuthbert Bay (Wild Life) Sanctuary from end of November, 2014 onwards. Cuthbert Bay (WL) Sanctuary is one of the most important turtle nesting beach in A&N Islands having a long stretch of sea beach of 10.5 km and have been receiving marine turtles for nesting from the year 2000 onwards. During this ongoing season, a total of 2565 marine turtles have visited the sanctuary for nesting till date. Mass nesting of olive ridley turtle was reported with 376 and 1575 turtles on Jan 11 and 12, 2015 within the sanctuary limits. Olive Ridley turtles are known for their mass nesting behavior or arribadas. During arribadas, hundreds to thousands of turtles come ashore simultaneously to nest. The Wildlife Division, Mayabunder is taking all initiative to provide full protection to the marine turtles visiting the sanctuary for nesting by deploying departmental staff & labours round the clock. Apart from the protected areas, the areas outside protected areas prone to turtle nesting are also being managed and protected by the Wildlife Division, Mayabunder. Such areas being Ramnagar, Kalipur, Lamiyabay and Ross & Smith Island where so far 152 turtles have been reported to have nested. Ex-situ conservation efforts are also done at all these above places by transferring the turtle eggs to artificial hatcheries and thereafter safely releasing the turtle hatchlings into the sea on hatching. Mainly the olive ridley and green sea turtles are known to have frequently visited these nesting sites, a communication said. Rate of PDS SKO revised Port Blair, Jan 20 Consequent upon enhancement of the dealers commission for PDS Kerosene Oil by the GoI, the A&N Administration has re-fixed the rate of PDS SKO (Kerosene Oil) for the entire union territory of A&N Islands. Accordingly, the retail selling price of SKO per litre will be Rs. 18.65/- while the wholesale price will be Rs. 17.35/-. The revised rates will come into force w.e.f. Feb 01, 2015. Allotment of seats in MBBS course-2015-16 Selection to be based on the marks obtained in AIPMT-2015 Port Blair, Jan 20 The first MBBS course in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Medical College, Port Blair is scheduled to commence from the Academic Session 2015-16. The allotment of MBBS seats in Andaman and Nicobar Islands Medical College to the students of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the Academic Session 2015-16 will be made on the basis of the marks obtained by the students in All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test – 2015 (AIPMT-2015) conducted by CBSE. All aspiring candidates have therefore been advised to appear in the All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test – 2015 (AIPMT-2015) conducted by CBSE in order to be eligible for admission in the MBBS course at Port Blair. Power suspension Port Blair, Jan 20 Power supply will remain suspended in some of the areas from 0730 hours to 1630 hours on Jan 22 for maintenance of RMUs near Island Niwas, Delanipur and shifting of Panther-I and Panther-II main transmission line at Attam Pahar subject to weather condition. The areas to be affected by power disruption are Light House, Phoenix Bay, Fisheries jetty area, Anarkali, Delanipur, Quarry Hill, Phongy Kyaung, Foreshore Road, Megapode, Teal House, and Horticulture Road. If required, half an hour rotational load shedding will be carried out at Port Blair and South Andaman areas on as and when required basis on Jan 22, for carrying out the work. IRS survey mandatory for plying of fiber, OBM boats Port Blair, Jan 20 After the unfortunate the boat tragedy of Jan 26, 2014, all Fiber/ OBM boats involved in tourism activities were subjected to safety audit and temporary plying permission was accorded and the same was being extended from time to time. The A&N Administration has been insisting that IRS survey (for appropriate buoyancy, strength of hull and determination of passenger capacity) of these OBM boats should be carried out keeping in view the safety of the passenger and as a legal requirement. However, majority of the boat owners have failed to carry out the necessary IRS survey of their OBM boats. Keeping in view the peak tourists season and other factors, the temporary plying permission has been extended upto 31st March, 2015 with the approval of the Competent Authority. In this regard, it is brought to notice of all concerned that no further extension of temporary plying permission will be considered by the Administration without IRS survey. Hence, all boat owners (who are yet to carry out IRS survey of their boats) have been advised to initiate necessary action for getting their boats surveyed immediately, a communication from Director (Tourism) said. DM constitutes teams for monitoring plying of registered boats for scuba diving activities at Havelock Port Blair, Jan 20 To monitor and enforce safety and mandatory operational requirements of the registered boats utilized for plying tourists for scuba diving activities at Havelock, two enforcement teams have been constituted which shall conduct daily inspections on the registered boats. Further to monitor the enforcement team, a supervisory team has also been constituted which shall conduct surprise inspections to ensure that the enforcement teams are conducting the daily inspections regularly and shall submit weekly report to the Additional District Magistrate, South Andaman.
