17 April 1982: William John Morrison, 42-year-old Protestant civilian, single and a farmer was from Kiltubrid near Middletown located 2 miles from the border. He was killed by the IRA in the yard of his farm. Two elderly brothers in an adjoining farm were held hostage by 4 masked IRA gunmen who used the house as a base to launch their attack. After the attack, the gunmen took the brothers car to escape. As Mr. Morrison began to work in the yard, 3 gunmen shot him. He fell wounded in the yard and tried to crawl for shelter but was shot again sustaining at least 8 gunshot wounds. His 80-year-old mother found his body. A spokesman for the police said that Mr. Morrison had no connections with the security forces and that there was no apparent motive for his murder. He was described by 1 of his neighbours as being quiet and well liked. Mr. Morrison was a member of the Orange Order and Royal Black Preceptory and his fellow members attended his funeral. The inquest was told by a police officer that Mr. Morrisons killing was a sectarian attack and said he had no connection with the security forces and a hard working farmer. LEST WE FORGET!
