1985 The wooden shingle roof of the old Gunnawarra homestead is the only fully original complete shingle roof left in Australia. It was saved due to the corrogated iron being put over it in 1907. The shingles were split from Yellow Stringy Bark trees at Splitters swamp that is now on Wombino Station - Warren Jonssons property south of Gunnawarra. Thus the homestead was one of the first buildings in North Queensland to be registered by the National Estate.. The rafters were Cyprus Pine which like the shingles have silica in the sap thus stopping the termites from eating them.
