2. The Enemy is Satan “For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world,...” (Ephesians 6:12). People are not our enemies. Our enemies are the spiritual forces of Satan. Satan is real, and the Bible calls him “the ruler of this world of sin” (1 John 5:19), the “Father of Lies”, a murderer (John 8:44), and “the Accuser” (Revelation 12:9-10). Satan’s goal is to keep people from God. He attacks our thoughts with lies, temptation and guilt so we will doubt our salvation in Jesus. He can’t take away our salvation, but he can steal our joy and destroy our desire to tell others about Jesus. Because Jesus wants us to be united in love, Satan tries to divide us and set us against each other.
