2014 RHHS graduate to spend two years in Mexico BRIDGEPORT - Trey Augirre has waited his entire life for the journey that awaits him Wednesday morning. The 2014 Red Hill High School graduate will head to Provo, Utah in preparation for his two-year service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Ive been looking forward to it for as long as I can remember, he said. Its 100 percent a choice. Its encouraged and recommended, but it was entirely my choice. When he departs Indianapolis on Wednesday, hell fly to an Latter Day Saints (LDS) mission center in Provo, Utah for six weeks of training. Once that is completed, hell be off to his final destination - Mexico City. I couldnt be more excited. Im absolutely thrilled, he said about his assignment. While in Mexico, Aguirre said he will travel around sharing the gospel with those interested in the LDS, also commonly known as Mormon, teachings. He will also have a chance to experience the cultural differences, which is something hes looking forward to. During an application process, Aguirre was able to make recommendations about where hed like to serve but the decision was ultimately made for him. One thing Aguirre said he is looking forward to is moving on to something bigger and better. Augirre is among a reported seven percent of LDS members who live in the Midwest, according to the Pew Research Centers Religion & Public Life Projects website. While he is among the areas minority, Augiree said he doesnt have any complaints. I definitely would say I had the best life I could have asked for. Ive been blessed with great family and friends, he said. The standards have made me who I am today. Being in Lawrence County and being one of only few Mormons has been a testimony builder for me. Itd be easier in Utah because I could piggyback off others, but I wouldnt have had to grow and learn. According to the article, 1.7 percent of the United States population identify as part of the LDS religion. While those members are spread across the country, 76 percent are located in western states including Utah, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Arizona. Once he completes his mission, Augirre has been accepted to Brigham Young University in Provo. He is undecided about a major, but said he hopes to find something in the near future.
