2015-01-14 Practice Drill, When Youre Chillin J. Bean As Ive posted before, I like to find ways to use my down time effectively. If Im sitting around and have a few minutes, I often grab some exercise bands and knock out a few sets. Or Ill practice a few drills. Heres another drill that I like. First - FOLLOW ALL FIREARM SAFETY RULES ! - Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction - Keep your finger off the trigger - Make sure the firearm and magazines are unloaded Second - VERIFY that your handgun and magazines are unloaded. Have someone perform a secondary verification. Remove all ammunition from the room and from your pockets. Third - REPEAT, FOLLOW ALL FIREARM SAFETY RULES ! Fourth - This is NOT a trigger manipulation drill. Do NOT at any time put your finger inside the trigger guard or press the trigger. Note: you can also perform this drill with a SIRT instead of a functioning firearm which adds another level of safety. So what is the drill ? Mag Swaps 1. You need 2 mags. Again a SIRT works great and is safer if you have 2 SIRT mags. Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction. 2. Insert an UNLOADED Mag into your UNLOADED handgun. 3. As you would with a tactical reload, position an UNLOADED reserve mag in your off hand 4. Perform mag swaps. Extract the inserted mag, and retain it. Insert the reserve mag. Reposition the extracted mag in your hand. Repeat. 5. Practice your speed and effectiveness. 6. Do NOT at any time put your finger inside the trigger guard or press the trigger. Some important things to remember. .... SAFETY RULES ARE CRITICAL ! DO NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS. MAKE SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW ALL FIREARM SAFETY RULES. VERIFY THAT YOUR FIREARM IS UNLOADED, ALL MAGS ARE UNLOADED, AND NO AMMUNITION IS IN THE ROOM OR ON YOUR PERSON. USING AN INERT PRACTICE GUN LIKE A SIRT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND ADDS ANOTHER LAYER OF SAFETY. I also like the SIRT because the mags are weighted and come closer to manipulation with a functional mag. This drill does not replace safe range practice. However, it will improve your magazine/reload manipulation and will help with your bio-mechanics. If practiced in a safe manner, it can be practiced while sitting on the couch relaxing.
