2015 Macon County (Ga.) High School standout linebacker Roquan Smith currently holds two offers from Ole Miss and UCLA, but many more are expected to be just around the corner. Roquan Smith According to 247Sports, Smith is ranked the No. 5 inside linebacker in the country and the No. 17 player in the state of Georgia for the class of 2015. He ranks No. 201 in the Top247. Smith is a very explosive player that uses his speed to his advantage. He is very athletic and tremendous in coverage at the linebacker position. He knows how to break on the football and shoots out like a cannon towards the ball carrier. “Right now, I’m working on getting better as a straight downhill tackler, but I’m real good sideline-to-sideline,” Smith said. “I’m also real, real good a covering. I’d like to play early if possible on the next level.” The 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker was offered by the Rebels on May 22. He said he was excited when the offer came. Smith said he likes Ole Miss and was really impressed when the Rebels landed the No. 1 recruit in the country last year in Robert Nkemdiche. “I like Ole Miss a lot,” Smith said. “I like that they signed Robert Nkemdiche. When I watch them on T.V., there’s one thing I know for sure. They play their hearts out and they’re ballers.” According to Smith, it shows a true passion for the game for players to play their hearts out like he saw Ole Miss do on television. He also feels that comes from good coaching. Smith said coaches that are willing to push their players to the extreme is one of the few things he’s looking for in a college. He believes the Rebel coaching staff does a nice job of that. “I’m looking for academics, relationships with the coaching staff and where I fit in best at,” he related. “I’m looking for coaches that’ll push me to the limit. Ones that don’t ever stop and coaches that won’t just give someone a spot.” Smith said he’s started to build a close bound with Ole Miss assistant coach Chris Kiffin. Smith feels it’s important that coaches are honest and open when recruiting a player. He said that’s what he likes most about Kiffin. “He’s a great guy,” Smith said. “He’s very up front. I really like how he came out and told the truth. Sometime other coaches sugarcoat things. He came out and told the truth about how it’s going to be.” Besides the UCLA and Ole Miss offer, Smith said he talks a lot with Kentucky and USC plus others. For now, he said he’s enjoying the process and is “wide open.”
