2015 NON PDP MEMBERS HAIL ADOPTION OF PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE AZIKIWE JONATHAN AS THEIR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE!!! Nigerians from different walks of live on Friday in Abuja expressed delight at the adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its sole candidate for 2015 presidential election. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party rose from its meeting on Thursday with a unanimous decision to endorse the president’s adoption by various organs of the party. A cross section of them told the News Agency of Nigeria that the development had foreclosed the controversy around Jonathan’s capacity to represent the party for another four years. They also said his selection had the propensity to reduce the tension within the party over the position. Mr Gbenga Okunola, a doctoral student of Political Science from the Benue State University, said the action was envisaged, adding that “this is the practice in even most advanced democracies around the world”. According to Okunola, President Jonathan deserves to be given “first offer of refusal” after his first tenure. “One thing we must understand is that the PDP is beginning to learn fast from these advanced democracies. “No responsible party would expose its member that has the opportunity to clinch victory in an election to ridicule. Jonathan remains a good product for the party,” he said. Okunala further said that the development was made easier because of the exemplary firm structure the party had built over time. “It is not like most parties in the country where their national, states leaderships and all other caucuses seem to have serious issues in deciding in situation like this. “I have seen that for PDP, once the central leadership decides on anything, it flows to base almost immediately. Therefore I see this as the best gift for Jonathan since joining politics,” Okunola said. On his part, Mr Chima Okafor, a public analyst, said the development would help to defuse the insecurity in the country. “Joanthan is now put in the better stead to deliver the deliverables to the country now and this includes the capacity to deliver back the country to the people from the hands of the evil ones. “Jonathan has been under tension himself as to whether he would be allowed to continue or not; this decision for me requires the support of all. “The problem of our nation has been that of poor political leadership as a result of absence of continuity of policies and projects, I think this would help the system,” he said. Alhaji Doki Garba, a social crusader, said the PDP had always shown direction for the rest parties, adding that there was nothing wrong in the party adopting Jonathan as its presidential candidate because he was not a fresher. “He is just about to conclude his first term; it is only fair that the leadership of the party allows him to complete the second term for the party. “The party may have realised that it is even dangerous to bring in a totally fresh candidate when the president is willing to go on. “This happens everywhere, including the United States that we always seek political directions from,” he said “If the larger population is satisfied with the entire procedure leading to Jonathan’s adoption, so be it,” he said. Garba, however, said: “the party must grow up from mediocrity to a serious organisation with a global recognition like its counterparts around the world”. Also, Mrs Alice Agube, a market woman, said: “Jonathan is our man or do you have a better candidate? According to her, the PDP is a party that listens to the cry of the people, especially women and has through the leadership provided by Jonathan, transformed most sector of the economy substantially. “The decision to adopt the president spurs from the public outcry for him to re-contest and I am happy when the news came yesterday,” she said.
