22 students here from the Boston Wilderness Survival and Primitive Skills Meet-up group. Theyre having a blast, but many of them didnt know what Primitive Skills was. Hmmmm...where to begin! When you become a primitive skills practitioner you understand that the birds have more meaningful tweets. Primitive Skills folks play accuracy games with the weather channel until they get better at it than what the computer models are saying. Dents in your yard mean something. So does all that green stuff. You can tell when there is mail in the mail box without having to walk down the driveway. You know it was a fox and not the neighbors cat that stalked the feeders last night. Your lawn is a salad bar AND a medicine cabinet. Being lost in the woods becomes a good thing. It becomes such a good thing that the struggle shifts from trying to make a living in an artificial construct to fitting in as much living as possible in the real and natural world without that construct imploding. Primitive Skills is your daily yoga every time you move through the landscape. Its therapy that brings you to a place of awe for the animals who let you walk with them, while understanding the sacred connection to them as you tan their hide and allow their flesh to fill your childrens bellies. Primitive Skills causes you to positively impact the environment by spreading important understory and apex species to maximize and maintain peak biodiversity. You do this because it directly impact the health of you and your family. It also feelsright as if it were supposed to work that way. If you are a primitive skills practitioner you dont have to pay to go to a zoo; the nature shows are unfolding all around you every time you get out of the box. Survival isnt something you do in nature, it is something that usually involves a cell phone, some appointments and a never ending series of expectations that have little to do with a healthy, fulfilled and meaningful existence built on a community of rich relationships. Survival is a comment on ones skill level in their chosen environment. Primitive does not mean stupid, it means profound simplicity that has endured the test of countless generations. A primitive skills school doesnt teach people how to be stupid. It shows folks where they are at in nature and then cultivates connection from the interests and passions that each student brings to the table. Herbalists, martial artists, yogis, military survival instructors, bird watchers, weavers, even computer analysts all find common ground in primitive skills. To me it is a gift from our ancestors, handed to us through our our parents to our grandparents. You already have these skills dormant and waiting to be reactivated. We all built shelters as children, we all pretended to be animals, we all had a sarting point for our entire human development called child like curiosity. I believe we all were supposed to cultivate that curiosity in a way that, as a byproduct, would lead us al to be plugged in to our environment. As a bi-product of these skills we become herbalists, meteorologists, trackers, and more. We become Nature Literate at a level of the literary masters, but with all of our senses to include our emotions. Anyway, thats where basket making, bow making, sling, stalking, camouflage, tree climbing and listening to birds for meaning has brought me. It also seems to be doing the same for anyone who chooses to immerse themselves in to Primitive Skills. After 25 years I see results are obvious, consistent, and indisputable. Gotta go share in some tracking with 22 folks, see ya!
