22nd & 23rd September 2012 - Match Race Boot Camp by Chris Dando Saturday was overcast with little wind as the teams got together for a weekend of match racing in the club RS Vision dinghies. The race team went afloat but initially the smoke was rising vertically! Eventually a light breeze filled in and the boats launched and the first races were started. In the first match Neil/Aaron, and Oat/Poom showed their colors by taking the first wins despite the wind swinging hard right. The race team had to completely reset the course for the following matches as the wind had turned from the South to the North. In the second flight it was the Varuna Instructors of Oat and Jordan who took advantage of their better boat speed and tactics to score wins. Jordan and Neil both added to their scores in the third set of matches. Oat was back in winning ways in flight 4, but the battle between Ken/Matthieu and Claes/Jimmy was not settled until the finish line. Claes was leading but with a penalty and Ken/Matthieu just managed to get across the line before their opponents realized that the umpires were still flying a flag. With another wind swing back towards the South, the final flight of the day was started in a dying breeze. The first match managed to finish the two rounds with Florent/Alex taking their first win of the weekend. However the second flight were struggling to get the windward mark. Eventually they did and Neil/Aaron had a good lead over Ken/Matthieu. However Neil/Aaron allowed themselves to get taken well south of the rhumb line to the leeward mark. Ken/Matthieu saw the error and cleverly kept a good course to catch up a significant distance and just get over the line first. On Sunday the teams reformed and the round robin continued. This time there was sunshine and a great breeze! The sixth flight saw Oat keeping his score sheet clean with another win, and Arnould/Jimmy beating Ken/Apple to take their first win. The RVYC instructors again added to their scores in flight seven. Flight eight saw the wind increasing, and Oat being defeated for the first time over the weekend by Florent. Neil/Aaron continued their good form with a win in the second match. The final flight of the round robin was sailed in an increasing wind causing some boat handling issues for some. Florent/Alex got away well in the first match, but the chasing Arnoud/Jimmy team had all their hopes destroyed by capsizing at the leeward mark. The final match was decided early with both boats being OCS at the start signal. Although Florent/Alex went back, the team of Ken/Apple failed to see the signal and return. A single match final was run between Oat/Poom and Jordan/Floris/Alexandro. The start was close but Jordan was over and had to return. Oat took full advantage of this and despite their light weight, held on to take the overall win for the weekend. Results Place Team 1st Oat/Poom 2nd Jordan/Jerome/Floris/Alexandro 3rd Neil/Aaron 4th Florent/Alex 5th Ken/Matthieu/Apple 6th Arnould/Apple/Jimmy 7th Claes/Jimmy
