30 Years ago West Chicago Community High School had computer programming classes and math teachers who were passionate about computer science (Mr. Lemon & Dr Murphy to name a few). These opportunities gave me and my fellow students exposure to careers that are relevant today. As my kids (Molly & Grant) enter high school, I am SHOCKED that WCCHS has NO effective computer programming courses available, and that students with an interest must elect to be bussed to the Technology Center of Dupage (30 years ago this was called DAVEA). I am shocked because with the obvious pervasiveness of the internet and technology in our lives, that not only are the basics not considered a core curriculum, they are not even offered in our school directly! Shocked because computers and electronic devices are becoming so integrated into our lives, that our children will be dependant on this technology regardless of their chosen profession, and we currently do not even make it an easy choice for students to get some basic understanding. 30 years ago, in drivers ed, they at least taught you how to change a tire... hopefully we are not creating a generation that is unable to continue innovating and leveraging technology, or to even have a clue of what to try when their technology stops working. If you feel the same, please support this measure to help making bringing relevant technology educational opportunities an available option.
