33 years ago today (October 10, 1981), John Henry became thoroughbred racings all-time leading money earner when he took the Jockey Club Gold Cup, holding off a late charge by Peat Moss in the final strides to take it by a nose: https://youtube/watch?v=DHexkk8Xhl0 The money record was something John Henry would hold until 1996 when Cigar (whom we lost earlier this week) broke it. John Henry would go on to take the first of his two Horse of the Year titles in taking this race (his other title would be as a nine year old three years later in 1984). Peat Moss was a remarkable story in his own right. Claimed out of a 35-way shake in 1980 by Murray Garren for $10,000 and trained from that point by Gil Puentes, Peat Moss became a fan favorite winning with weights of up to 145 pounds(!) on his back. He took two of the three runnings of the original Kelso Stakes (a two-miler only run from 1980-82) at Aqueduct (the current Kelso Stakes was originally known as the Brighton Beach Handicap and was a race as such that John Henry actually won in 1980). This was an act of sportsmanship by the Rubins in bringing John Henry east for the Jockey Club Gold Cup when they did not have to. Its the kind of sportsmanship that is sorely lacking in this sport today.
