3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jan. 25, 2015 [Jonah 3:1-5,10; Ps. 25; 1Cor 7:29-31; Mk. 1:14-20] The Ministry of Jesus was marked by a call for repentance and believing the gospel. He called His disciples to follow Him, that is, to be like Him and to join in His Ministry. They left everything and followed Him to become fishers of men. We have the same call today in one way or the other. Compare the little we do in this ministry with how the politicians and businessmen go all out to attract votes and customers, respectively. Jonah had a call to preach to the people of Nineveh. He reluctantly responded and was greatly disappointed with the mercy and graciousness of God towards the Ninevites, non-Jews. He was embarrassed by the Ninevites’ acceptance of the call to repentance; their turning away from their wickedness; their turning towards God in all humility and averting God’s anger. He was displeased by that which pleased God. St. Paul encourages us to always remember that the world is passing away and nothing should distract us from pleasing the Lord, including our joys and sorrows and self-righteousness. For us to follow Jesus and to share in His ministry, we must enlarge and soften our hearts to be like His. His merciful and compassionate heart remains open to all God’s children…. How erroneous we are when we write some people off and deny them opportunities of accepting the gospel and of repentance. May we pray with the Psalmist: O Lord, make me know your ways. In your merciful love remember me, because of your goodness, O Lord. God bless you!!!
