46 years ago, this photo of United States Navy Chief Carl M. Brashear was featured in the April 1968 issue of EBONY magazine when he became the Navy’s only one-legged diver. The loss of his left leg in an aboard ship accident in 1966 was expected to end Brashear’s diving career, and possibly even his Navy career. In this photo he is helped into his regulation 190-lb. gear as he wears the look of determination that became his trademark when all had counted him out. In 1954 he became the first Negro salvage diver in the United States Navy. The movie Men of Honor, featuring Cuba Gooding, Jr. told the story of Chief Carl Brashear.
