50 years ago today Pres. Kennedy had been invited to Gettysburg Pennsylvania to deliver an address to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Pres. Lincolns Gettysburg address. President Kennedy replied personally to the sponsors of the commemoration now known as remembrance day known as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War regretfully explained to them that he had a conflicting schedule which was to bring them to Texas to tour number of cities. We all know now the results of the choice that Pres. Kennedy made. It is well-known that the president regretted not being able to go to Gettysburg for the ceremony. I dont know how many times Ive thought about this often during the yearly remembrance day program. How history would have changed. Being a historian I think about things like this like how our history would have changed if Pres. Lincoln had not gone to the theater on April 14, 1865. How history can be so affected by individual choices. Most of us were old enough in 1963 remember where we were over doing the day Pres. Kennedy was shot. We did not know that Pres. Kennedy did have a choice. Since I learned that fact I will never forget it.
