592 Days until the Scottish parliamentary elections on Thursday - TopicsExpress

592 Days until the Scottish parliamentary elections on Thursday 5th May 2016. At that point we will be able to evaluate whether the unionist parties have kept each and every part of the deal that was offered immediately before the referendum on the 18th September 2014, without any reduction of existing powers and without penalties. If they have not delivered on their contract with the people of Scotland, via a newly mandated pro-independence Scottish government in 2016, we will declare the result of the 2014 referendum nul and void. In the meantime we all need to continue to build the momentum of the independence movement by diligent scrutiny of the promises that the unionists made, the lies that were told and the threats that were made. We are now more aware of the bias throughout the media and hopefully we are more aware of sources that are more balanced and where we can find a counterpoint. Importantly though, we need to continue to make the positive case for independence for Scotland and to discuss and set out our vision for a better, fairer, more democratic and more prosperous country. We need to consider how we can limit the way that big business and the establishment in general can override our beliefs by threats to our lifestyle. We need to develop an independent society. We must encourage innovation and entrepreneurial spirit to provide more local opportunities and we need to build community groups, including local renewable energy schemes. We need to think wider and look to other small European countries to see that an independent Scotland can easily be incredibly successful and we need to consider what is important to us when we measure the success of a country and to evaluate how that success is divided across society. I suspect that a great many of you who voted Yes were really surprised at how much they wanted independence and how much the result hurt. I have no doubt that some who voted No instantly realised that you had made the wrong decision when the result was announced. I suspect that following the ugly triumphalism in George Square and the unravelling of the promises by the unionists even more of you are now ready to support the Yes movement. We must maintain our engagement in politics and our interest in the injustices within our society, doing what we can in the meantime. We can help our local communities and spread the Yes message at the same time. We must never lose hope.
