5th October 1934: Asturian rebels march on Oviedo. Aviles, Gijon and the arms work at Trubia are captured. A general strike is called in Catalonia. The Gloucester Echo reported that George Lansbury MP was refusing to hand over any official cabinet documents in his possession now he wasn’t in the cabinet. It also reported several hundred people had been killed in rioting in Madrid. All Madrid shops except those selling milk were closed by a general strike, the metro was not working but buses were working –under armed guard. Meanwhile the Hull Daily Mail reported the honey harvest was smaller but better quality and the prospects were for a record beet season.
