6,000 People Displaced as Indonesias Mt. Sinabung Erupts Indonesia Severe // Volcano JAKARTA -- An official said Mount Sinabung in Karo district of North Sumatra erupted anew on Tuesday, ejecting a cloud of ash and prompting nearly 6,000 people to evacuate. The volcano has been dormant for three years but roared to life in September and has been showing intermittent activity since then. According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesperson of the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, the height of the ash cloud was not measured because the volcano was blanketed by clouds. However, he noted that hot ash was ejected to Sinabungs southeast and passed through a number of abandoned villages on the slope. As of Tuesday, a total of 5,576 people have been displaced. Authorities have declared a 3-km evacuation-zone and they raised the threat level to stand by, after the surge in seismic activities over the recent weeks. 2 hours ago/ Comments/ Share via ubAlert Team / News Media Verified
