7th January, 2015 To, Editor-In-Chief, Times of India, No.40/1, 1st Floor, S & B Towers, M G Road, Bangalore - 560001 To Whom It May Concern This letter is written as a rebuttal to the blatant lies published in your newspaper by your reporter Mr. Rajiv Kalkod on 11th December, 2014. He has irrevocably marred my reputation and I truly fear for the safety of my family. In case you need a refresher, it is about the incident where I was racially profiled and physically attacked on 7th December, 2014 at Star Bazaar in Koramangala, Bengaluru. Apparently, Mr.Kalkod reported that on viewing the CCTV footage, I was the perpetrator and not the victim. What baffles me is how an esteemed newspaper such as yours can allow your reporter to publish an article based on lies as against the highest ethics of “Accurate”, “Unbiased” and “Verified” professed by your institution as per on: timesgroup/bccl/code-of-ethics.html I met the Commissioner of Police and he assured me that no one had had access to the footage and what was published was inaccurate. Then how, does this justify the article that was published? An official complaint was filed with the police and the matter is under investigation. Subject to the pending outcome of the investigation, such baseless reporting is uncalled for and very hurtful and harmful. I want you to know of the mental agony and emotional trauma that I have had to go through because of the false accusations and immense defamation. The world we live in thrives on social media, and having to have to read hate messages falsely addressed towards my family, my community and me is truly uncalled for. I believe you need to right this wrong by publishing an apology in the Times of India. The pen definitely is mightier than the sword and we know the impact media has on all of us. You have the power to make or break a person. Your newspaper has broken me. We wait on you every morning to provide us with the factual and truthful news. All I ask is for an apology from Times of India and set the facts right. Please do it for the sake of truth and justice. Thank you, Rachel Sangliana PS: If you are going to share my status, please COPY & PASTE it on your wall. If you share, it shares only the TOI link. Thanks.
