#9: Ghost of Corporate Future by Regina Spektor My first year in Vancouver my term at Studio 58 made me a mix tape, one that had so much thought and love put into it still regularly makes a spot in my rotation today. The first song on the tape, courtesy of my dear friend Andrea, introduced me to a diminutive songstress named Regina Spektor. A twee voiced pixie, who has the most adorable way of pronouncing “ooh” sounds, Spektor has as unique a voice as can be imagined, literally and in the way she writes. ”Ghost of Corportae Future” is a soothing reminder of the stresses and minutiae that can bog down our day to day lives, and how it is possible to brush it off and enjoy the little things. Both a song and a self-help to-do list, Regina’s words come to me in moments where I sometimes feel lost. The phrase “People are just people, they shouldn’t make you nervous” plays in my head quite constantly. Paired with a charming and simple melody, it’s the perfect song for a stress case like me.
