9 October 2014 GADA: an Indigenous African Democracy Public Lecture by Prof. Asmarom Legesse at Leiden University African Studies Centre(ASC) At the occasion of Oromo yearly celebration of Irreecha, thanks giving day in Amsterdam, Prof. Asmarom Legesse will give a public lecture in Leiden. The aim is to share his expertise with other interested researchers, policy makers, students and of course the Oromo community in The Netherlands. Prof. Asmarom Legesse will present an anthropological and historical analysis of the Gada institution, its peculiar properties in relation to Western democratic traditions and an examination of why Mainand European scholars identified it as a democratic institution whereas British social anthropologists were unable or unwilling to do so. Professor Asmarom Legese is an African anthropologist PhD Harvard, Emeritus Professor, formerly of Boston and North Western Universities and Swarthmore College in Philadelphia. He also served as a visiting professor at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, and The Netherlands and as Academic Vice-President of the Asmara University, Eritrea. He has conducted many years of field research among the Oromo of Ethiopia and Kenya. He is the author of Gada: Three Approaches to the Study of African Society, of which a revised edition is forthcoming.
