9 % of Canadian voters determine Canada’s global warming - TopicsExpress

9 % of Canadian voters determine Canada’s global warming policy According to a Globe columnist reporting on the latest update on global warming from the UN Panel on Climate Change (in sum, the time for denial is over), 30 percent of Canadians are global warming deniers. Also reported is that the Harper government depends on “a disproportionate number of that 30 per cent” for support – i.e. they will vote to keep Harper in power. I got curious, so I visited Elections Canada to find out how many voted in the 2011 federal election and found that almost 15 million voted (14,823,408). We know Harper won that election with just 36 per cent of that number (5,334,260). If we take that 30 percent as a starting point and consider that ‘disproportionate’ could mean we are looking at a 25 percent level of support from global warming deniers for the Harper government (1,333,565 of that 5,333,260). Knowing what we know about the Conservative’s election machine and how ardent their supporters are, I think we can conclude that the Conservatives successfully get the bulk of these voters to the polls. My admittedly rough conclusion: Nine per cent of those who voted in the 2011 federal election determine Canada’s global warming policy (1,333,565 of the 14,823,408 2011 voters is 8.9 per cent). We need to bear in mind that we are not only looking at a Conservative government’s continuing failure to develop global warming policy, we are also looking at a Prime Minister whose support for tar sands pipelines know no bounds.
