A 77-year-old woman was cremated instead of buried as she had desired, according to a lawsuit filed in Yuba County Superior Court. Sharon Schifferns filed the suit against the owners of Sierra View Mortuary and Lakeside Colonial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Services. The suit, transferred to Yuba County earlier this week, seeks unspecified damages. Schifferns mother, Bonnie Alvarez, died on Oct. 13, 2012. She was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 41 years, according to her obituary. Alvarez embraced the western life. She liked country music, dogs and horses. She was a medical records technician at Rideout Hospital and a member of the Moose Lodge, the obituary said. The suit said Sierra View received Alvarezs remains on Oct. 14 and agreed to provide funeral-related services and to accomplish the burial of the remains of (Alvarez). Sierra View transported the remains to Lakeside, where Alvarez was allegedly cremated the next day instead of another decedent after being misidentified ... and delivered to Lakeside for cremation, according to court papers. Attorneys for Schifferns and Lakesides owner, Claney, Oatmeyer & Semenyuk Inc., did not returns phone calls on Friday. Sierra Views owner named in the complaint is Stonemor GP LLC of Levittown, Pa. Schifferns filed her case last year in Sacramento County Superior Court because it also named a funeral home in that county as a defendant. That funeral home was dropped from the case, leaving only the defendants from Yuba County. The website for the California Department of Consumer Affairs Cemetery and Funeral Bureau does not list any disciplinary actions against Sierra View or Lakeside.
