A Bengali Muslim student from Jadavpur University talks about the various problems faced by Muslim students trying to find accommodation in Kolkata. While most landlords turn them away, even the brokers charge more from them because they allegedly have to face more "risk". While most of the Hindu festivals are celebrated in the Jadavpur University hostels including Saraswati Puja and Viswakarma Puja, when they tried to organise a seminar on the occasion of Ramzan on campus, the administration refused to allow them to do so because it was allegedly a "religious festival". He also talks about the various difficulties faced by him among the students because he is a Muslim. They have not tried to create any organisation to support our cause as yet. But he agrees that lower castes and Muslims should come together to create a political organisation because even they face the same problems as him. Pointing out caste discrimination in the hostels, he says that when a ST student passes by the corridor, other students often pass comments like "where is that black (dark-skinned) boy going? How did he get in here?" Even the student unions are dominated by upper-caste Hindus although the lower castes and Muslims put together are often more in number in the hostels. So they are trying to come together under the same banner. He ends saying, "I could not even get any mess service... It feels really bad that because I am a Muslim, I cannot be accepted as a Bengali."
