A CHILDS RIGHT TO SCHOOL?.............. A state level consultation on the topic “A child’s Right to school?” was organised by BOSCO in collaboration with Save the Children and Azim Premji University to understand the status of implementation of the RtE Act in the state of Karnataka since its inception in 2009. The consultation critically analyzed the pros and corns of the Act and the impact it has made on the education system in the state in terms of quality education for all the children. The consultation was addressed by experts from the field of education, officials from education department, Members of Child Rights Commission, RTE activists, voluntary organizations, local self government, SDMC members, parents and children. The key speaker of the consultation was Mr. Ashok Agarwal, Lawyer, Supreme Court and President of All India Parents Association. He spoke on the topic “National Perspective on RtE Act and its Implementation”. In his words right to education is not merely an Act, it’s a birthright. Whether child is going to private or public school it should be completely free. If the govt. run schools are functioning well, there will not be any reduction in the number of children studying in govt. schools. Use legal provisions and fight out in the court which he had been doing for since 1996.
