A FB friend asked me to give a brief list of donation opportunities for the Philippine Livelihood Program initiated by Missionary Salvador Cariaga and under the oversight of Shepherds Hill International. The hub of this ministry is Arapal Christian Camp. It is normally a base for spiritual ministry and a model for livelihood programs that teach agriculture, animal husbandry and cottage industry. The most recognized program is the Give A Goat ministry. A basic local pregnant goat costs about $50. A goat starter package has a cost of about $100. A family in poverty on unproductive land can receive a pregnant goat and almost immediately have milk for their children. A start up includes a pregnant goat, starter food, earthworms, seeds and chicks. A teacher shows them how to take care of the goat, and use the manure, seed and worms to create fertile gardens to grow food. The chickens grow on the garden by products, earthworms and residue from the goats. Within a few months a family can become self-sufficient. The most pressing issue is rebuilding from last year’s typhoon that was a direct hit on the camp. Some of the structures have been repaired or rebuilt. The camp became a refugee center for hundreds of people who lost everything. There were some intern ministers in camp that gave up rebuilding their lives to help others rebuild. They were still living in tents when another typhoon hit last week. Getting them basic, low cost housing is a big priority. Though salaries are minimal for camp workers, there is a need for funds for general operations. These people are very necessary to give hope, encouragement and a hand up to people without hope. They help in teaching spiritual and livelihood basics. These are just a few of the opportunities for giving that are offered through Shepherds Hill. Unrestricted gifts allow funds to be used where they are needed most at the time. SHI will honor any request for specific gifts to orphans, or homeless. Gifts, to buy goats, or pay tuition or church development will be used as specified. SHI has no paid staff in the US and with the exception of very minimal promotional cost, all monies are sent to the Philippines to help those in need. For more info go to shepherdshill.org/. or message me. Thanks to Jackie Mitchell Menzdorf for requesting info.
