A LABOR DAY STORY: Well, it didnt really happen on Labor Day per se, but it was labor day nonetheless. It was late Saturday night in the middle of a typical hot and humid South Carolina summer. Our neighbor ran to our door and frantically pounded away. I was lying on the sofa, watching TV. My wife, Kathryn, quickly answered the door. Our neighbor hurriedly explained her plight. A friend was in labor and needed to get to the hospital right away. Her friends husband was playing poker with friends (another story), and she was unable to contact him. Yes, there was a day before cell phones! Our neighbor couldnt leave her small children and wondered if I would drive friend to the hospital. Its an unforgettable way to first meet someone. I quickly put on my shoes, hurried to my car and drove the short distance to pick up the lady in labor. With very little small talk, except for whispered words against her husband, I quickly drove her to the emergency room. The ER folks, having experienced this scenario many times checked her in and rushed her toward labor and delivery. I dutifully followed along, taking the belongings she had brought. As they opened door to the labor camp, I stopped to hand the bag to one of the nurses. The nurse said, Oh, you can come on in to be with her. I said, Im not her husband. All of them stopped, and yocould hear a pin drop. All of them stard at me for what seemed to be bringing out a sense of false guilt in me
