A Message from the Africa Ministry... SLAVERY IN MAURITANIA Today, in the year 2014, slavery still exists in the world. Mauritania, located in West Africa, has the highest percentage of enslaved people in the world. More people are enslaved, percentage wise, in Mauritania today, than were enslaved in the United States prior to the Civil War in 1860.Mauritania’s slavery is as abusive and violent today, as American slavery was 150 years ago. Children are sold away from their families, women and girls are raped, and all are beaten.Mauritanian slavery is based on race and descent. Dark Africans are enslaved by lighter Africans and persons of Arabic descent. Slavery is inter-generational, with many people being born intoslavery because their parents were slaves.
