A Message of Hope: A Mom shares: My son, now 19, has ADD and Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Im not sure what they call it now, but he was one of the earliest kiddos diagnosed with it. Hes on medications, but we also had him on special diet from the time he was 4. We restricted artificial ingredients as much as possible. Dyes, flavorings, additives, preservatives, including BHT and TBHQ, were prohibited. Elementary was fine, he got through, they just thought he was a little weird and he had a few friends here and there. In middle school, it was rough. Hormones, everyone trying to find their place, Ben was socially awkward, but he survived. If there was a problem, I took care of it, discreetly, and I did put the some of the blame on my kid because he did attract the unwanted attention, especially on days he forgot his meds. High school was different. He found his niche. He helped start an anime club after school one day a week and he even found the sponsor, a teacher who got Ben and his quirkiness. Friday during lunches, they had card games, some of which Ben liked. He got involved with that, too, and even they met at a local restaurant after school a few times to play Magic or Dungeons and Dragons. Ben now lives on his own in an apartment. He makes his own meals- not ramen every night, either, because I taught him how to make simple meals and stressed the importance of shutting off appliances. He is taking classes at a local community college and we are hoping to get him into the x-ray tech program. He finally got his drivers license- he didnt need it when we lived in an area with great public transportation. And this past weekend, he came over with several job applications and asked that we review them. he had done a great job filling them out and we didnt even have to prompt him to go look for a job!! I never thought we would get this far, but we are there and it looks like everything is going to be alright. Even if there are days when nothing gets done and dinner is junk food or popcorn, you made it through another day and thats a win. There were days when I didnt even have the energy to get out of my PJs, but Bens on his own and he turned out alright. Deep breath, chin up, chest out and love that perfectly imperfect kiddo of yours.
