A Simple Bit of Research On Syria - By myself, Chris Chris ConstableGpie Gillespie For the past 2 hours, I have been doing research. My last job gave me a skill that I still use based on all the research I had to do on warfare, particularly irregular warfare. I am particularly skilled at playing devil’s advocate for current events meaning that I always do true research on a subject before I believe it, or furthermore post it. As we speak, our president is truly determined to push for military strikes against the Assad regime in Syria because of the chemical attacks in Damascus. I am careful with my words, because I don’t want to make rash statements. It gives me little satisfaction knowing that our president has declared no ground troops would be deployed, but let’s be honest, he seems to be negotiating on a used car deal with us all on that statement. The truth is, through the small amount of research I did (and I am particularly skilled at research) I can already see that there is nothing to gain from conducting such attacks, yet everything to lose. Additionally, the president has yet to give any justification as to why he is pursuing such an endeavor. Let me explore what we have to lose, so that our country does not have to repeat a disaster like the invasion of Iraq. Before I begin, I would like to point out that I cannot find any credible source regarding Russia involving itself in direct attacks with the US. While it is true that Russia has deployed warships in the Mediterranean (which USA today will try and persuade the reader that these ships are meant to intercept any US ship) They did not deploy anywhere near the amount of ships it would take to disable the US navy presence in the Mediterranean. In fact, this seems to be more of a defensive measure to possibly evacuate Russian posts in Syria if need be, as well as a show of force. Let me remind all of my friends, that the deployment of ships is not always an act of war: The US has been deploying ships all around since at least WWII. I would also like to point out, that while a year ago, leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may have threatened the US with a response should the US attack Syria, many leaders of Iran today have simply said that it will attack the “Zionist Regime” should the US attack Syria. 1.) While David Cameron (British Prime Minister) voted in favor of military response, the rest of Parliament did not, ensuring that the UK would not participate in such an attack. 2.) Some reports suggest that the Obama administration may not wait for the completion of a UN investigation into the attacks in Damascus: a critical blow to US relations to UN. 3.) While I am pleased to see that no credible sources exist (to my knowledge) that Russia and Iran would involve itself in a direct attack against the US, I do see a powder keg growing with this issue. Russia and Iran are currently cooperating to devise a warding strategy to stop American intervention. This could mean Iran possibly shutting off the strait of Hormuz to the US through which a large amount of oil is funneled through. 4.) With Iran threatening to attack Israel in the event of a Syrian attack by the US, this means that four players would then be involved; Russia, Israel, the US, and Iran. I do not have the foresight to know how many other nations would side with whom, but this seems like a recipe for another World War. I do not understand the President’s hastiness in wishing to attack Syria without so much as an explanation to America’s people, or the completion of a UN investigation. What I do see is a horror brewing that can only lead to disaster for our country, whether it be through sanctions against the US causing our economy to finally collapse, or through direct conflict. 1.) foreignaffairs/articles/67561/michael-broening/the-sturdy-house-that-assad-built 2.) online.wsj/article/SB10001424127887323324904579044700315742362.html 3.) nytimes/2013/08/31/world/after-british-vote-unusual-isolation-for-us-on-syria.html 4.) theguardian/world/iran-blog/2013/aug/30/iran-us-attack-syria-restraint 5.) usatoday/story/news/world/2013/08/29/syria-iran-retaliation-threats-not-empty/2726493/ 6.) freebeacon/iranian-official-israel-to-be-first-victim-of-u-s-attack-on-syria/ 7.) https://naplesnews/news/2013/aug/29/iran-work-russia-stop-us-strike-syria/ 8.) www1.american.edu/ted/ice/HORMUZ.htm
