A WORD CONCERNING FAMILY. . . When one considers the meaning of the term prodigal which means to be at an over-abundant or an extravagant level, one has then to concede that there was not just one prodigal in the incident/parable told by Jesus but three of them. In addition to the prodigal younger son who was prodigious or extravagant in his waste, there was also the prodigal older son who was prodigious or extravagant in his jealousy and of course, the prodigal father who was prodigious or extravagant in his love. (Luke 15:11-32) Now clearly, the primary intent of this story is to show forth the incomprehensible, indescribable and unsearchable love of God as seen in the Fathers unconditional and unwavering love of his wandering child. But there are other lessons contained in this account too which it would do us well to take note of, particularly as it speaks to the issue of FAMILY! First, beloved, if the Family is to fulfill her role as outlined by God who created her, it must never close its doors to her sons, but ever remain willing to receive them back when God have brought them to that place called rock bottom. There can be no denying that a major contributing factor to the young man going back home to his Father was the conviction some where in his heart that the doors to his Fathers house remained open to him! Secondly, we must never lose sight of this powerful truth of COMMUNITY & thus CONNECTIVITY regarding the concept of Family. The idea that when one hurts, all hurts; when one is in need all must see that need as part of their responsibility to meet. This is the message of the Father to the older son who very sadly and tragically had no idea of what TRUE FAMILY was all about and thus was sadly disconnected from his brother and even from his Father. Paul the apostle, in writing to the members of the community of Faith known as the church defines clearly the concept of FAMILY: He [Christ] makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. (NLT Ephesians 4:16) Beloved, make no mistake about it: ITS A FAMILY AFFAIR! Be blessed!
