A band of zany members, corny jokes and on occasion absurd attire, this group are dedicated to working their butts off for the benefit of the community. The Carisbrook Lions Club are involved in the RACV Energy Breakthrough, and have our own ‘Lions Crash Corner.’ Whether it’s cycling events, Relay For Life or building fences for the victims of fires, the Carisbrook Lions are always ‘hands on.’ Lions have members working as volunteers for the local newspaper, the Carisbrook Mercury. Other members represent our area as councillors within the shire. Various homes for the elderly or handicapped are visited by the Carisbrook Singers – a group including Lions members. Singing Lions Singing Lions Lions Workgang Lions Workgang Most Carisbrook Lions members are also volunteers for other worthy organizations. A Tilly Aston Committee has been auspiced by the Carisbrook Lions Club to initiate a project to build a Tilly Aston Memorial Centre and Sensory Garden. This project will inspire our children and bring Australian pride both locally and nationally. This will be an information centre to learn about the achievements of our great Australian blind hero of history. Events in Carisbrook ‘Cup At The Creek’ – is on Melbourne Cup Day itself Our own cup day celebration hosted by the Carisbrook Lions Club is held near the bank area of the creek. Lions run horse races (wooden horses) sometimes sailing them down the creek. The children run along the bank of the creek excitedly calling their horse’s names. Cutie Pie Cutie Pie Cheese selection, fine wines as well as prizes for best dressed etc and three legged races, egg and spoon race. Well supported by the communities of Carisbrook and other towns within the shire. Im just being me Im just being me The Melbourne Cup is televised for those interested. ‘Cup At The Creek’ is an Australia Day Award Winner for the Carisbrook Lions Club. Christmas With Us This Christmas celebration has been growing over 11years now. Hosted by the Carisbrook Lions Club this is aimed at providing a Christmas lunch for those who are alone. Some people have family living far away and some don’t have family at all. This is a get together for a traditional festive meal, singing, Santa and gifts. There is a bus to pick up guests and return them home. There is no charge for this. We just don’t want people to be alone on Christmas Day. Last Christmas Day the Carisbrook Lions had over 100 guests without family who came from all over the shire – and beyond! Relay For Life The Carisbrook Lions Club members whole heartedly involve themselves in this event. Relay For Life is an overnight event that gives an opportunity for family, friends and colleagues to get together with the community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Carisbrook Lions at Relay For Life Carisbrook Lions at Relay For Life It is a unique event where teams of 10 to 15 challenge themselves to take turns to keep a baton moving in a relay style walk or run overnight. Each event is unique and you can stay for the whole event, camp overnight, or just visit and enjoy the free entertainment, prizes and ceremonies that make Relay For Life so inspirational. The Central Goldfields Shire hold their Relay For Life at Princes Park in Maryborough. Clean Up Australia Day’ Clean Up Australia Day takes place every year on the first Sunday of March. The Carisbrook Lions members join hundreds of thousands of Australians by getting involved and cleaning up their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish. Lions roadside rubbish removal team Lions roadside rubbish removal team Updated statistics show that in 2011 an estimated 565,510 volunteers across Australia helped to celebrate 21 years of Clean Up Australia by donning gloves and filling up Clean Up Australia Day rubbish bags with an estimated 16,454 tonnes of rubbish at 7,479 registered Clean Up Sites across Australia. A big well done to everyone involved! Australia Day Celebrating Australia Day Celebrating Australia Day On the 26th January each year the Carisbrook Lions Club host the Carisbrook Australia Day celebration. This is a special celebration for locals and visitors alike. Free bbq sausages, music, poems, speeches, and of course the awards. In memory of our eminent blind pioneer the Tilly Aston Awards are presented to those who have greatly served the community on a voluntary basis. Carisbrook’s prime award of Mayor of the Day is presented to a person who has excelled with years of service to the community. He or she wears the mayoral sash proudly for the rest of the day. They instigated the meals for flooded Carisbrook residents, three times daily for several days, then twice daily for weeks and even now 9 1/2 months later are still holdong monthly dinners with relevant speakers. During the early weeks there were many helpers, from Maryborough and beyond. Without this Pride of Lions at Brook, the emotional fallout would have been immense. Well done!
