A bit of weariness sits with me on the precedent set now that legislation was rushed through to remove native trees windthrown after a storm on the West Coast. I was willing to entertain some advantage here in helping a depressed community, but apparently the removal techniques are more invasive than that posited in the late 80s early 90s when stringent protocols were discussed should helicopter extraction be given case-by-case sanction. Last weeks decision is claimed as protecting more significant forest, but also provides the legislature should other weather events open up other tracts of forest. A market and infrastructure incl roading might begin to increasingly encroach on more of our forests haphazardly in time, and not with the degree of forethought and planning once contemplated during the phase I remember well as a teenager trying to understand a big debate amongst conservationists as to the possibility of sustainable logging of native tress. I think we may be fiddling away with personalised politics as considerable decisions slip on through.
