A couple thoughts, 1. We parents tend to be obsessed with our childrens education and overly concerned about their college prospects. Why are we (generally speaking of course) so narrowly focused on one rather small avenue of possibility... that of the secondary education? Which leads me to 2. As an alternative, I believe whole-heartedly in business, the creative life of an entrepreneur. As a young music student I never would have imagined myself saying that. Im so pleased that my employers at Purdue University talked me into getting a business degree. Ironically (because it cost a lot of money and I dont think most people need to get an MBA). But I learned that business can be really creative and fun! And years later when I left the corporate world to become a business owner - I learned so much more and continue to to this day. My son will be given a business when he turns 18, (before he goes to school, whenever he determines that start date) and my dearest wish is that he learns through creative will, action, failures, and discipline - what he is capable of. That he not only can create an income to support the career of his dreams (without concern about income), but that he learns resilience and unlimited possibility. We need out-of-the-box game-changing thinkers and DOERS in the world that is coming. I want to support my own kids and their generation in creating their world. Meaning..... I dont feel depressed by the article, rather, I feel a responsibility as a parent and business mentor to get actively involved in presenting entrepreneurial possibilities to todays youth.
