A day in my life! This article does not even begin to scratch the surface of the condition of gas mains in New York! The NY Times is incorrect...we (National Grid) have LIVE gas mains that date back to 1884 and older! Im working on a project in Coney Island right now and some of the gas mains were installed between 1894-1909. Also, its easy for someone to say they should all be taken out and replaced. Its A LOT easier said than done! We are currently working on replacing 9 miles of pipe over 3 years. That is a MOUNTAIN of work, man power and money. To try to sum this all up...by the time (if it ever gets here) that all the pipe is replaced it will be time to start at the beginning and do it all over again. I can say this, Ive been with the company for 22 years and public safety and consumer satisfaction are priorities #1 in National Grid. Nicolina Ragusa Cooke
