A few months ago, I started noticing all the bird nests around me. I wondered if birds always return to the nests theyd built the previous season. Turns out that many birds do not return back; they construct a new nest each season. At first, I didnt get it. Why put all that work and effort gathering twig by twig just to use it for a short while and then abandon it to start all over again? It didnt make sense. What the birds have helped me to see though is that all too often we try to construct nests of safety, comfort, or home for ourselves. Once built, we insist on the permanency of those nests. We falsely believe that we should always return to them because since they were home for us once, they should be home for us always. We dont see what the birds see -- we need different nests for different seasons, different homes, and places for us to grow until the next turning of the season. Im feeling grateful for the lessons taught by our winged friends who understand impermance far better than I do.
