A first person, moving memory. My friend, fellow warrant - TopicsExpress

A first person, moving memory. My friend, fellow warrant communicator and Coastie, and radioman school classmate, Jim Ferg Ferguson, had the radio watch that fateful night, at Coast Guard Group Muskegon MI. I almost ended up there instead. However, before graduating from RM school in Petaluma CA, just after we got our assignments, we swapped - I was originally assigned to Group Muskegon, and he was assigned to Group Southwest Harbor ME. So, I went Down East, and he went mid-West. The rest, as they say ... It was 39 years ago tonight - Id been a USCG communicator for about a year and half - Standing the night watch alone - it had been pretty quiet - until - it was one of the longest nights of my life. I didnt know it then, but it was a night creeps back into my dreams from time to time, hauntingly so. RIP - the 29 man crew and the SS Edmund Fitzgerald - gone, gone in a single radar sweep. Superior, they said, never gives up her dead, when the gales of November come early - :-(
