A foreigner for Caps United? January 7, 2015 in Soccer, Sport HARARE giants CAPS United have settled for a foreign coach in their bid to end nearly a decade of waiting for the ultimate prize of domestic football — the league title. TAWANDA TAFIRENYIKA SPORTS CORRESPONDENT Caps United last walked to the winners’ podium way back in 2005 when Charles Mhlauri was in charge, having won the league title the previous year. Although Caps United officials refused to disclose the coach they want to succeed Taurai Mangwiro, who left to join Harare City in December last year, an informed source close to the team dressing room revealed to NewsDay Sport yesterday the 2005 Zimbabwean champions have hired a foreign coach. The coach, believed to be from neighbouring South Africa, is set to be unveiled at a Press conference this morning. The source, however, could not reveal the identity of the coach. “What I just know is that he is a foreign coach from South Africa. He will be unveiled tomorrow (this morning),” the source said curtly. A number of local coaches have been linked with the job including Gishon Ntini, Jostein Mathuthu and Lloyd Chitembwe. The Green Machine have been without a coach since Mangwiro left them along with his entire backroom staff that included assistant coach Mike Madzivanyika and goalkeepers’ coach Richard Tswatswa. Mathuthu was in charge of Black Rhinos last season, but failed to save the team from relegation while Ntini was with Chiredzi FC last season and also failed to save it from the chop. This is not the first time Caps United have hired a foreign coach after engaging Northern Irishman Sean Connor in January 2012. Connor wa,s however, later relieved of his duties following a spate of dreadful results with the 3-2 defeat to Hwange at the Colliery proving to be the final straw. The Harare giants finished a credible third position in the league last season under the guidance of Mangwiro — their best finish in recent years. And the club management appears determined to lift the championship this term despite facing a mass exodus of players. Several players at Caps United have already engaged the Footballers’ Union of Zimbabwe in a desperate bid to move away as the club has been struggling to pay the players due to financial constraints. United have already lost midfielder and 2014 Soccer Star of the Year finalist Tendai Samanja and goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube, who have since joined Mangwiro at Harare City after their contracts expired. Striker Dominic Chungwa has also revealed he wants a move to rivals Dynamos while Kelvin Bulaji has already sealed his move to DeMbare. cc. Newsday
