A great message from Dillon McCarthy and a great cause to support! See you soon Dillon! Hey everybody, I hope this message finds everyone well, and I cant wait to be back with all of you during the summer. However, today, April 2nd is national autism awareness day. One of they key aspects of the fraternity I have decided to join is a philanthropic 5k in support of Autism Speaks, an Organization dedicated to finding a cure, aiding families, and providing public awareness for autism. As it stands, UCONN is one of the major public institutions doing research into autism, for causes, cures, and solutions (more about that can be read here: https://chip.uconn.edu/research-areas/autism/autism-research-projects/) As of today, the statistics for autism are as follow. -Autism is 4x more likely in men than in women (1 in 42 vs 1 in 189) -Autism costs on average between 60,000 - 100,000$ per year per child for treatment. -8 of 10 families with autism end in divorce, and that number is rising -Autism can be responsible for PTSD in a number families, adding additional medical costs and stress -There is no known cure, or cause for autism, although some studies released this week have shown a possible cause to be linked to abnormal pre-natal brain development through biological triggers. -Autism is up from 1 in 2500 in 1985 diagnosed to 1 in 60 children diagnosed (this is a result of an increase in autism and more advanced detecting/diagnosing techniques) I would like to ask those who are able or who would like to make a donation to Autism speaks U to follow the link below. Any and all donations are welcome and are greatly appreciated by me, Tau Kappa Epsilons UCONN chapter, and those that this money will go to help. For those who wish to run in the 5k at UCONN, or for those who have questions about Donating, or TKEs philanthropy, Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you once again for any donations, thoughts, and considerations. A special thanks to Cindy for allowing me to post on this group as well. Respectfully Yours, Dillon R. Many are not sure whether or not autism is actually rising, or its rather that our medical definitions of autism are changing, as detection and diagnostic methods become more advanced and accurate, reports the CDC. Please consider all facts before deciding to or not to donate.
