A letter from the IACP is attached below. It is very disappointing that the Feds are taking such a poor stance. Dear IACP Member: As you know, yesterday the United States Department of Justice announced that it would not challenge the marijuana legalization laws in Colorado and Washington. In response, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, along with a wide coalition of law enforcement leadership organizations, expressed its extreme disappointment with the decision in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder. The letter made clear the law enforcement community’s profound concern over the decision and its impact on our communities and the safety of the citizens we serve. The decision ignores the well-established connections between marijuana use and violent crime, the potential trafficking problems that could be created across state and local boundaries as a result of legalization, and the potential economic and social costs that could be incurred. In addition, the letter also strongly criticized the Department for failing to consult with state, tribal and local law enforcement organizations prior to reaching this decision. A copy of the letter can be found on the IACP web site by clicking here. Sincerely, Craig T. Steckler President
