A lovely ancient birch tree from a small village in the middle of Saaremaa island in Estonia. This tree must have been planted centuries ago in the middle of the village square, where it had a special place of honor. The remains of an old traditional swing lying next to it. During the Second World War, the entire village was deported to Siberia, leaving empty farms and untilled lands. Slowly life seems to be creeping back into the village amongst the broken buildings that the forest is slowly reclaiming. This majestic moss-covered birch is like a lone sentinel, remembering what was, and protecting what is!
