A new orchestra business model being imposed by a large - TopicsExpress

A new orchestra business model being imposed by a large conservative donor? I have heard this line before, especially when it comes at the expense of players income and artistic excellence, and union busting tactics. I find it interresting how often orchestra managements fail to meet or excel the requirements set by the board for growth, and who ends up paying the price are the musicians who consistently deliver their end of the bargain along with audience members who eventually end up with a lower quality product. On top of it, managements, when in crisis, will ask the musicians to assist in what is their area. Never heard of musicians asking management to practice their parts for them! Perhaps what the MSO needs is accountability, a NEW ADMINISTRATIVE AND CREATIVE FUNDRAISING/INVESTING MODEL, an artistic ambassador that is truly committed to actively sell the MSO product, and a visible public regional appeal for financial support! Not just a news article saying that it is in financial trouble. For the high artistic level the MSO plays for a base $59,000 salary, Milwaukee has a super orchestra for a national bargain price! Unfortunately, setting such a national trend only devalues the expertise and abilities of its fine musicians. jsonline/news/milwaukee/mark-niehaus-faces-executive-challenges-at-mso-with-musicians-passion-b99133082z1-230373941.html
