A person hit by a train on the BNSF Railway Co. bridge over the Nooksack River parallel to Main Street has caused the train to stop and is blocking the Washington Street crossing (edit: we said Second Avenue initially, but its technically Washington Street where the tracks cross) in the Griffintown area. The backup is also impacting traffic on northbound Interstate 5. Update at 6:23 p.m. - Main Street traffic is backed up to Barrett Road now, too. We advise that you try to avoid coming as far as Ferndale to get back into town. Consider getting off at Slater Road and taking a back way home. Weve been told by the Police Department that, per BNSFs standard procedure in these cases, the train crew will be replaced and the railways law enforcement unit is traveling up for the investigation. We do not know at this time when the train will be moving again. If we hear more, we will share it here as quickly as we can. Edit at 6:24 p.m. - Wrapping our other post into this one for ease of reader use: A few more details on the train backup and person hit. We can unfortunately confirm that this person is deceased. The victim has not been identified. The train will not move until a new crew arrives, and they are traveling up from Seattle. Edit at 7:47 pm - one more update from our page being pasted here: Final update of the night: The BNSF train has been moved and the Griffintown entrance to town is back open. We appreciate your patience. Ferndale PD informs us that, based on all of the witnesses theyve spoken to, it does appear that this was a suicide. It may be some time before the victim is identified as there was no identification on him. Finger printing may be necessary.
